Which Honda CR-V Key Do You Have?

The CR-V has used five distinct key systems across its six generations. Identifying yours is the first step to an accurate quote:

• 1997-2001 (1st gen): Plain double-sided mechanical key, no chip. Cheapest to replace — we cut by code or from your existing key.
• 2002-2006 (2nd gen): Transponder key with a chip molded into the black plastic head. Must be programmed to the immobilizer before the engine will start.
• 2007-2011 (3rd gen): Remote head key — mechanical blade plus integrated 3- or 4-button remote (lock, unlock, trunk, panic). Both the transponder and the remote need programming.
• 2012-2016 (4th gen): Same remote head key style, with HON66 high-security blade on later trims. EX-L and above offered Smart Key push-button start as an option.
• 2017-2022 (5th gen): Smart Key fob (proximity) standard on EX and up; LX still got a remote head key. The Smart Key uses a HITAG3 transponder and rolling-code remote.

All-Keys-Lost: What If You Have Zero Working CR-V Keys?
