Proximity Fob vs. Traditional Remote Key

A proximity fob (also called a smart key or prox remote) is the keyless device used in push-to-start vehicles — you keep it in your pocket, the car detects it via a low-frequency antenna, and you start the engine by pressing a button. Most US-market vehicles 2010+ use proximity fobs. Older vehicles (pre-2010) and base trims often use a traditional remote head key with a metal blade you insert into the ignition.

How Proximity Fob Replacement Works
