Which Honda Civic Key Do You Have?

The Civic has used five distinct key systems across its eleven generations. Identifying yours is the first step to an accurate quote:

• 1992-1995 (5th gen): Plain double-sided mechanical key, no chip. Cheapest to replace — we cut by code or from your existing key.
• 1996-2000 (6th gen): Mostly mechanical, with later trims (EX, Si) introducing the first Honda transponder chip in the key head. Must be programmed before the engine will start.
• 2001-2005 (7th gen): Transponder key standard across all trims. Black plastic head, HO01 blade. Programs through the immobilizer via OBD-II.
• 2006-2011 (8th gen): Remote head key on EX and above — mechanical blade plus integrated 3- or 4-button remote (lock, unlock, trunk, panic). DX/LX got a basic transponder. Both styles need programming.
• 2012-2015 (9th gen): Remote head key standard; HON66 high-security blade introduced on the Si and Hybrid. Smart Key push-button start arrived as an option on EX-L.
• 2016-2021 (10th gen): Smart Key fob (proximity) standard on EX and up; LX still received a remote head key. HITAG3 transponder, rolling-code remote.
• 2022-2026 (11th gen): Smart Key only across all trims, including the Civic Hybrid, Sport, Touring, and Type R. Newer fobs use Honda's latest encryption — we have the OEM-grade equipment to handle them.

All-Keys-Lost: What If You Have Zero Working Civic Keys?
