Rekey or Replace? The Right Lock Decision When You Buy a Home in Colorado
Homebuying · Published 2026-04-01
Closing day in Highlands Ranch, Centennial, or Lone Tree comes with a stack of decisions. One of the easiest to get wrong: locks. The previous owner had keys. So did the realtor, the inspector, every contractor who worked on the house, and possibly multiple former tenants. Rekey or replace? The honest answer surprises most homeowners.
The 30-Second Answer
Rekey, in 90% of post-purchase situations. Rekey costs $145-$245 for a typical 4-6 door home, takes 30-60 minutes on site, and gives you the same security outcome (old keys invalidated) for 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of full replacement.
Full replacement makes sense only when (a) the existing locks are 15+ years old, (b) hardware is physically damaged, or (c) you want a security or aesthetic upgrade beyond what rekeying delivers. Full decision guide here.
Why Locksmith National Chains Push Replacement
National locksmith dispatchers earn 2-4× more on a replacement than a rekey, so their incentive runs the other way. Their suggested "quote" on the phone is often $80-$150 for "the rekey," but the on-site upsell to replacement is the real revenue. We charge $25-$40 per cylinder rekey and stop there if rekey is appropriate. Most Highlands Ranch homes need rekey, not replacement.
What Rekey Actually Does
Rekey replaces the internal pins inside your existing lock cylinder. Old keys no longer work; new keys cut to the new pin code do. The lock body, the deadbolt, the strike plate, the door prep, the hardware finish — all stay the same. We can also key all your locks alike so a single key works everywhere (front, back, garage, mudroom).
Closing-Week Coordination
Most Highlands Ranch homeowners want their locks rekeyed within 24-48 hours of closing. We schedule rekeys based on your closing date:
- Closing-day rekey — we arrive 30-60 minutes after you have keys in hand. Done before you move in. Common request: 1-3 PM Friday.
- Move-in-day rekey — we coordinate with your movers' schedule.
- Pre-tenant rekey (for landlords) — we rekey between move-out and the next tenant's move-in. Property management discount available for ongoing accounts.
Highlands Ranch / Centennial / Lone Tree Specifics
BackCountry, Heritage Hills, Castle Pines Village (gated communities) — we handle gate access through standard vendor protocols. Coordinate ahead of closing.
Sterling Ranch and newer Lone Tree builds (smart-locked) — we rekey the mechanical override cylinder AND reset the smart-lock codes. Both are necessary: previous owners might still have the smart-lock app paired to the device.
Older Northridge / Willow Creek / Bow Mar homes (15+ year original hardware) — this is the case where replacement may be more economical. We diagnose at the rekey appointment and tell you upfront if the cylinder is past service life.
Smart Lock Reset (Don't Skip This)
Smart locks (Yale Assure, Schlage Encode, August, Kwikset Halo) have multiple authentication methods: Wi-Fi app, Bluetooth, keypad code, mechanical key, sometimes biometric. After a home purchase you must invalidate ALL of them:
- Factory-reset the smart lock and re-pair to your phone
- Delete all stored Wi-Fi access codes
- Generate new keypad PINs for everyone in the household
- Rekey the mechanical override cylinder (we do this on site)
- Delete the lock from the previous owner's smart-home account (if you can't verify, do a factory reset)
