When's the Best Time to Rekey or Upgrade Locks in Colorado?

Lock service can happen any month, but Highlands Ranch homeowners get noticeably better outcomes when they schedule with Colorado's climate in mind. Avoid winter for outdoor work; favor October and April for preventive service. Here's the year's schedule we recommend.

October — The Sweet Spot

By far the best month to schedule rekey, lock change, deadbolt installation, smart lock retrofit, or annual lock service in Highlands Ranch. Reasons:

• Daytime temperatures still mild (45-65°F), no winter freeze risk during install
• Locks have endured the summer heat (95°F max) and any expansion/contraction has settled
• Pre-winter is when chronic problems surface — sticky locks, worn cylinders, smart-lock battery drain — ideal for diagnosis
• Locksmith schedules are open (not the post-burglary December rush)
• Holiday gift-giving season (smart locks make great gifts) hasn't spiked demand yet

April — Second-Best

Spring service is good for catching issues that emerged over winter. Door alignment shifts during freeze cycles, smart-lock batteries are at half-life, and outdoor activity is starting back up. Schedule the annual maintenance now.

December-February — Avoid for Outdoor Work

Reasons to delay non-emergency lock work:

• Outdoor temperatures below 30°F make adhesive-based lock body installation unreliable
• Door frames are contracted — strike plate alignment that's perfect in January will rub in May
• Frozen-lock emergencies dominate locksmith schedules; routine appointments take longer to book
• Salt and de-icer residue gets dragged inside and ruins clean install conditions

July-August — Avoid for Door Frame Work

Hot summer days expand door frames. A strike plate adjustment in August will create a too-loose fit in October when frames contract. Wait for September or do it in October.
